How to care for your lawn—The 5 most important things that YOU can do for your lawn! One of the most important things for your lawn is to mow it at the correct height. The correct height varies upon the type of grass you have and the season. If you want to be perfect, look up the recommended height for your type of grass, but most grasses are best at 2 to 3 inches during the spring and fall. During the summer, it is recommended to go higher if possible. Before winter, and during the winter, if needed, cut the grass at 1.5 inches.
If your grass has had the chance to grow substantially, keep in mind to never remove more than 1/3 of the grass in one mow. For example, if your grass is 6 inches long, only cut off two inches the first time, and then you can mow a second time and cut off 1 to 2 more inches. When cutting your grass, be sure that the blade is always sharp. The blade is the most important part. A cheap mower will cut better with a sharp blade then an expensive mower with a dull blade. Dull blades tear up the grass and may make your grass appear uneven with a jagged brown line across the top.
Just like humans, grass needs water too. Grasses typically need 1-1.5 inches per week. Invest in a rain gauge to measure how much rain you are getting. Be sure to water your lawn if Mother Nature is not contributing enough.
Food is important for grass, as well. One of the most dangerous things for lawns is to be fed too much, never over-apply fertilizer; it will only hurt your lawn. It is recommended to fertilize grass four times a year, once in each season, with summer being the least important and fall being the most important.
In order to keep your yard pretty and healthy, you may want to invest in weed killers. Normally preventive weed killers do the trick. Simply apply it in the spring, this will prevent any current seeds from forming, but if any seeds are carried into the yard, then you may have some weeds. Mowing at the recommended height also helps reduce weeds. Tags: How To Care For Your Lawn
